Repairing gates, fences and boundary walls

We repair fences, gates and walls that separate your home from a road, public space or footpath. This is known as a boundary fence.

We don’t usually repair fences between neighbouring homes, this is know as a divding fence. These are your responsibility unless your tenancy or lease says otherwise.

How we carry out gate, fence or boundary wall repairs

Depending on the circumstances we'll carry out one of the following:

Basic repair

This is a simple repair to make the fence or gate safe and working. It may not look new.

Make safe repair

If something is unsafe, we’ll act to reduce the risk. This may include:

  • a basic repair
  • Using temporary supports or straps
  • Or even removing the fence or gate, especially in poor weather

Replacements

We don’t automatically replace fences. We review each case. We may consider replacement based on:

  • what your tenancy or lease says
  • any security risks
  • any vulnerabilities, especially where safety is affected

For homeowners and shared owners

As each lease/freehold agreement will provide for differing responsibilities on walls/fences there is not one single rule for homeowners. Check your lease and title plan for information on your responsibilities, and if you'd like us to have a look at your title deeds, contact the Home Ownership team on [email protected] and we can confirm your responsibilities.
