Moving into your first home after leaving care is a big step. It can feel exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. That’s why we believe every young person leaving care deserves more than a tenancy. They deserve a home where they can feel settled, supported, with the right help around them to build confidence and independence.
The Hyde Young Care Leaver Pledge puts that belief into action. It’s our promise to give young people leaving care extra support with housing, skills, work and wellbeing when they move into one of our homes.
Our pledge
If you’re a young person with care experience, we’ll give you extra support and practical help as you move into one of our homes and as you settle in.
- A place to call home: a self-contained one-bedroom home (as a minimum), ready for you to move into. It will be freshly decorated, carpeted and have essential furniture and appliances.
- Support from day one: a dedicated person at Hyde, who will regularly check in with you to help you settle in and make your tenancy a success.
- Feeling safe and secure: practical guidance on looking after your home, fire safety, emergency support and how to report repairs.
- Opportunities to build a career: access to employment, training and skills support, including apprenticeships, work placements, volunteering, CV and interview help, employer links and grants.
- A network of people in your corner: joined-up support with local authorities, leaving care teams and trusted partners, to get you the right help when you need it.
- Being connected to what matters: help with digital devices, skills and internet access, so you can make the most of online opportunities and manage your home with services like MyAccount.
- Long-term support: if you live in one of our homes and have experienced care, we’ll fund your membership to the Rees Foundation’s ‘Ask Jan’ service, where you can get advice, support and be part a community of people with the same experiences.
Who this support is for
The Hyde Young Care Leaver Pledge is for young people with care experience, aged up to 25, who are moving into a Hyde home.
This isn’t something you need to sign up for directly. If your local authority or leaving care team puts you forward for a Hyde home, we’ll work with them to understand whether the pledge can support you and what help may be right for you. We’ll then talk this through with you and explain the next steps.
If you’d like to understand more about the pledge and the support it offers, you can also get in touch with us or speak to your leaving care team.
Support that lasts from Ask Jan
If you’re supported through the pledge, we’ll offer you funded membership to the Rees Foundation’s ‘Ask Jan’ service.
We also believe that support shouldn’t end when you turn 25, so we’ll also fund membership for you if you’ve experienced care and would like to use it.
The Rees Foundation is a charity that supports care-experienced people at any stage of their lives. Through their ‘Ask Jan’ service you can get advice, find opportunities and connect with people who understand what it’s like to leave care.
If you or someone you know would like a membership, or you’d like to know more about accessing Ask Jan, please get in touch with us.
The Care Leaver Covenant
We’ve signed up to the Care Leaver Covenant because, as a housing provider, it’s our job to do more than just hand over the keys.
Every year, around 100,000 young people leave care in the UK. Many move into adulthood without the family networks, practical support and opportunities that other young people can rely on during this transition.
That’s why the Care Leaver Covenant was created. It recognises that improving outcomes for care leavers isn’t something local authorities can do alone. Its aim is to bring together organisations across wider society so they can use their skills, expertise and resources to create opportunities and support for young people leaving care.
By signing the covenant, we're joining a growing movement of organisations that believe young people leaving care shouldn't have to do it alone. We have a unique opportunity to support that ambition, not only by providing a home, but by working alongside local authorities, leaving care teams, charities and community partners, to bring together the different services and people a young person may need during this important time in their life.
