Staying safe in the hot weather
Our tips for keeping your home as cool as possible
When the weather warms up, most of us enjoy it – but very hot days can affect your health and make homes feel uncomfortable. Here are a few simple ways to stay safe and keep your home as cool as possible.
Keeping yourself well
The NHS has some great guidance on how to stay safe in the hot weather.
- Try to drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty
- If you’re heading out, stick to the shade where you can, especially during the hottest part of the day (around 11am–3pm)
- Light clothing, a hat and sunscreen can help protect you when you’re outside
- Take it easy and save more active jobs for the cooler parts of the morning or evening.
Keeping your home cool
Staying safe in hot weather (GOV.UK)
- During the day, close curtains or blinds in sunny rooms to reduce heat indoors
- Open windows later in the evening or overnight when it cools down outside
- Switch off unnecessary lights and appliances can also help keep temperatures down
- Use electric fans if the air temperature is below 35°C, but do not aim the fan directly at your body as this can lead to dehydration
- Check that any heating is turned off
- Turn off lights and electrical equipment that are not in use
- Go outside if it is cooler outside in the shade
- Public buildings such as places of worship, local libraries or supermarkets may be cooler than your home. If they are nearby, consider visiting one of these as a way of cooling down if you are able to safely travel there without putting yourself at more risk from the heat.

Looking out for each other
Hot weather can affect anyone, but it can be harder for older people, young children, people who are pregnant and those with health conditions.
If you know someone who may need a bit of support, it’s a good idea to check in on them during hotter days.
