Pension Credit and how to claim your Winter Fuel Payment

You should claim Pension Credit if you can. As many as 880,000 people might not be claiming Pension Credit when they should be, missing on average an extra £3,900 per year.

If you receive Pension Credit, you'll still get your Winter Fuel Payment. If you apply for Pension Credit by 21 December 2024 and opt in to backdate the payment, you’ll also receive the Winter Fuel Payment.

What does Pension Credit mean?

It’s not just a sum of money that you receive, there are other benefits too. Pension Credit tops up:

  • your weekly income up to £218.15 if you’re single
  • your joint weekly income up to £332.95 if you have a partner.

If you’re disabled, or you’re a Carer, or you have children, the amount could be significantly more.

You’ll also receive:

  • a reduction in you council tax bill via the Local Authorities Benefits department
  • a free TV licence if you’re aged 75 or over
  • help with NHS dental treatment, glasses or transport for hospital appointments
  • help with your heating costs through the Warm Home Discount Scheme
  • A discount on the Royal Mail redirection service if you’re moving home.

Winter Fuel Payment

You can get a Winter Fuel Payment for Winter 2024 to 2025 if you were born before 23 September 1958. You must also live in England or Wales and receive one of these benefits:

  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit.
