Silverfish are harmless, wingless insects. Damp, mould and leaks within a home can provide the perfect breeding and feeding ground for them. Silverfish are not harmful to human health like bed bugs and mosquitos, because they don’t bite or carry disease-causing pathogens.
Treatment
The best way to get rid of silverfish is to eliminate their preferred high humidity and damp conditions. If you have issues with damp in your home, please contact us and we’ll inspect and treat the damp and any leaks that you may have.
Silverfish are attracted to areas with high moisture levels. Bathrooms are well-known for being damp and humid, so they often create an ideal habitat for them. Open the windows and use the extractor fan. Apart from dry conditions, bright light and lack of starchy materials, silverfish are also deterred by certain smells. Use cedar-based products, such as cedar blocks or cedar oil, which are a natural repellent for silverfish. Essential oils such as lavender, citrus or cinnamon also have silverfish repelling properties. These oils can be soaked in cotton balls and placed in infested areas.
