Keeping homes safe this Gas Safety Week and beyond
This week, we’re supporting Gas Safety Week (8-14 September), highlighting our commitment to safety in our homes
At Hyde, the safety of our customers is our number one priority. Our teams and contractors carry out thousands of checks each year, making sure every boiler and gas appliance is safe and working properly.
These checks protect against risks such as gas leaks, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.
In the last year:
- We’ve carried out 24,322 gas safety checks across our homes
- Our contractors responded to around 500 emergency callouts, keeping our customers safe around the clock
- Our emergency and routine repair response time increased to 97%.
Stuart MacLean, our Heating and Gas Operations Manager, said: “Gas safety is one of the most important responsibilities we have. Each check we carry out is about more than just compliance – it’s about keeping our customers safe in their homes. Ultimately, we all have the same goal – safety. Through collaborative working with our contractors and customers, we can prevent risks and protect lives.”
How you can stay gas safe
While our contractors and gas engineers are here to do the heavy lifting, there’s some simple steps you can take to stay safe at home:
- Always let us in to your home to carry out annual gas checks when we’ve made an appointment
- Test your carbon monoxide alarm regularly
- If your gas appliances aren’t working properly, get them fixed right away or report it to us
- Never block air vents and make sure the gas flue is always kept clear.
And if you think you can smell gas or fumes, call the National Grid gas emergency call centre on 0800 111 999.
Gas Safety Week is a national campaign, held annually by the Gas Safety Register that highlights the importance of staying safe with gas in your home. It’s an important reminder, but our work goes far beyond this campaign. By combining expert safety checks, strong partnerships and working closely with our customers, we’re making sure safety comes first.
