From Mozart to Michael Jackson, the orchestra gave the community a harmonious afternoon

Thanks to Brixton Chamber Orchestra – local musicians who provide audiences in Brixton and beyond with ‘an orchestral experience’ – the Stockwell community had an afternoon to remember. The 30-piece orchestra played to a packed Morley College hall, with a unique mix of classical, rap, and singalong hits.

Originally taking place on the basketball court at the Old Laundry community centre, the bad weather meant that an open-air concert wasn’t possible. But, even the rainy weather couldn’t dampen the spirit. A huge thank you to Morley College for stepping in and hosting the event indoors where residents showed up in full force, filling the venue to capacity.

The event was part of Brixton Chamber Orchestra’s ‘Summer Estate Tour’, which aims to bring live music directly to local communities. The aim of the tour is to connect with new audiences, who might not otherwise experience a traditional concert setting.

Hyde’s Projects and Partnerships Manager, Rachel Pearson, said: “This was an incredible concert and a truly collaborative effort. The idea was pitched and led by Stockwell Gardens Residents’ Association and we were proud to support it.

"We supported with everything from logistics, to sponsorship via Match My Project, to teaming up with Young People Matter to promote and deliver the event.

“This kind of community partnership shows what’s possible when people come together to make a difference in a community.”
