A deep clean has marked the first step in Brighton Open Market’s revival, helping breathe new life into one of the city’s best‑loved community spaces.

Blending independent retail, local food culture and creative enterprise under one historic roof, Brighton Open Market was originally established in the 1920s. We played a key role in the redevelopment of the market in 2014, and continue to do so today.

Through our subsidiary, Pinnacle Group, the market has been given a full spring clean as part of an ambitious plan to revitalise this much‑loved community hub. Known for its independent traders, local food producers and creative businesses, the market continues to play a big part in Brighton’s vibrant community life.

As part of the first phase of improvements, we arranged steam‑cleaning and treatment works across the market floor, staircases and communal areas, along with graffiti removal.

Group Chief Executive of the Hyde Group, Andy Hulme, commented: “The Open Market is such an asset to the community, and we’re really pleased to have been able to support it with the spring clean. As an organisation with close connections to the market, and as a major provider of affordable homes in the city, we want to support cultural institutions like this, as they’re part of what makes Brighton special.”

Cllr Ty Goddard, Brighton & Hove City Councillor and Director of the Brighton Open Market CIC, welcomed the changes, saying: “These market revival plans will change the market for the good. Cleaner, brighter and more colourful, and all with better customer seating. Thanks to the volunteers on the Board, market management and Hyde for investing in the future and our city.”

Next, the market will be repainted and new murals added, with improved signs to help visitors find their way around. These changes will be complete by April. A final phase will redesign the Market Square, with better seating, a new layout of pop‑up stalls and improved services for visitors.

Alongside this, a refreshed website and booking app have already boosted visibility, attracting more than 130 traders and nearly 500 stall bookings since January. And in May, the market will become an ‘Artists' Open House’, showcasing local artists every weekend.
