Building a sustainable future

We’ve renewed our commitment to making our homes, offices and supply chains more sustainable

Our updated Sustainability Strategy 2024-2030 (PDF, 8MB) sets out the progress we’ve made since launching the strategy in 2022 and how we’ll continue to make customers’ homes energy efficient and affordable to live in; how we’ll minimise the environmental impact of building affordable homes; and how we’ll make our neighbourhoods more climate resilient and biodiverse.

“We’re committed to ensuring all our homes reach a minimum of EPC Band C by 2030. We’re endeavouring to build homes that meet the highest rating, EPC Band A, and, where that isn’t possible, for them to reach a minimum of EPC Band B,” said Hyde Chief Operating Officer Neal Ackcral.

“As well as helping the environment, this will help reduce customers’ bills, making homes more affordable to live in. We want to help everyone living in our homes to live more sustainably.”

We’ve improved the energy efficiency of thousands of homes in the past few years, saving customers up to £100 a month on their energy bills in many cases. Retrofit programmes have been delivered using various funding streams, including the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, which is helping to pay for improvements to hundreds of homes in Chichester.

And we have a number of development schemes underway that will deliver highly sustainable homes with renewable heating systems, high levels of insulation and electric vehicle charging. For example, at Swanstree Avenue, Sittingbourne, we’re working with Chartway Partnerships Group to deliver 135 EPC Band A-rated affordable homes. The scheme is designed to be highly sustainable, while addressing the need for high-quality housing in the area.

We’re also improving and protecting nature in our neighbourhoods and communities. We’re enhancing green spaces, including more nature-friendly and climate-resilient plants and designs, and working with our customers, partners and local stakeholders to create greener, healthier places to live.

“We’re also making our operations more sustainable,” Neal said. “We’re working to reduce the carbon emissions of our travel, the energy we use and the products and services we buy. We encourage customers and colleagues to walk, cycle and use public transport, we’re switching our fleet to electric vehicles; and we’re cutting energy use in our offices.”

We monitor our sustainability performance against our short, medium and long term targets, through our annual environmental and social impact reporting.

“We’ve started our journey towards net zero carbon and made good progress. Together with our customers, colleagues and partners, we’ll continue to strive to create a better, cleaner environment and reduce our carbon footprint.”
