Evidence of squirrels and birds

You may hear loud noises from the roof and may spot a nest; squirrels can chew through electrical wires.

Prevention

Keep bins closed, do not leave food waste lying around and clean up spills immediately.

Treatment

All wild birds, including their nests and habitats, are protected. Some are considered pests; however, during the nesting period consideration needs to be given before any treatment is undertaken. In the case of both squirrels and birds, a licensed professional must carry out treatment, which may include sealing up entry points and removing nests.

Pigeon/bird netting

We don’t carry out pigeon/bird netting to any homes, car parks, terraces or balconies.

If we’ve previously installed pigeon/bird netting to your terrace or balcony, then we’ll repair/replace where needed.

Pigeon/bird netting that was installed as part of the original construction of the building will be repaired or replaced if it becomes damaged or beyond its life span.

How to prevent pigeons and birds from using your terrace or balcony

To effectively keep birds off your balcony or terrace, it’s important to understand what draws them in:

  • shelter from wind and rain
  • flat surfaces ideal for nesting
  • food crumbs and water sources
  • quiet, undisturbed corners

Keeping your balcony clean and unattractive to birds is critical:

  • clear food and drink leftovers immediately
  • sweep droppings regularly
  • avoid feeding pets on your balcony
  • seal bins and compost containers

Visual bird repellents - reflective objects:

Birds dislike flashing or moving light. Hanging old CDs, reflective tape, or foil strips can be a simple, budget-friendly deterrent.

  • hang them so they spin with wind
  • it works best when multiple reflective surfaces are used

Natural smell-based repellents:

Birds have a highly sensitive sense of smell. Certain strong scents can help repel them.

  • peppermint oil: apply on cotton balls and place them in corners
  • citrus peels: scatter dried lemon or orange peels near known landing spots

These options are eco-friendly and safe, especially in households with pets or children.

More about squirrels and birds

Grey Squirrels are considered pests in the UK. As well as damaging woods and forests; they can also damage homes and gnaw through wiring, increasing the risk of fire or electrocution. They will enter buildings during the day and can nest in loft spaces and eaves.

Evidence of squirrels or birds in your home include noises in the ceiling, droppings on the floor and exterior walls. Droppings can block gutters and down pipes, which can lead to flooding, ruined decoration and damage to the outside of your home. In the worst cases, bird and squirrel infestation can cause structural damage. Droppings can also make paths slippery and dangerous.

Birds and squirrels can also carry diseases, including salmonella and a type of viral pneumonia. Insects and mites also live in nests which can infest homes.
