Fire Door Safety Week 2024 swings into action

Posted on 23 September 2024

The safety of our customers is at the heart of everything we do

That’s why we’re proud to support Fire Door Safety Week 2024 – an important initiative which aims to raise awareness about the critical role that a fire door plays in saving lives and protecting property during a fire.

Our commitment to fire door safety

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, we regularly inspect all communal doors and front doors within our buildings in line with the Fire Safety Act.

Lesley Smith, Head of Building Safety and Neighbourhoods, said: “This year, we’re supporting Fire Door Safety Week differently as we’ve brought fire door safety checks in-house. Our staff are now trained to carry out these vital inspections, ensuring that our buildings and customers are safe.

“Delivering these checks through our own teams will ensure we continue to put customers at the heart of what we do. Colleagues who carry out these checks are also our customers’ point of contact for the Hyde services they receive.”

Why fire door safety matters

A fire door plays a crucial role in protecting lives and property. It creates a barrier preventing fire and smoke from spreading. A well-functioning fire door gives additional time, creates a safe refuge for occupants and provides a protected route for emergency services.

However, for fire doors to work properly, they must be properly installed, regularly inspected and maintained and used correctly.

Working together for safer neighbourhoods

Fire Door Safety Week is a reminder that safety is a shared responsibility.

James Finch, Head of Fire Safety and Delivery, said: "We’re committed to working with our customers, contractors and fire and rescue services to make sure our homes remain safe.

“While our team is dedicated to making sure our homes are safe, it’s important that our customers practise home safety and report any faults to us. By working together, we can create safer neighbourhoods for all".

If you spot a fault with a fire door please report it to us immediately by calling 0800 3 282 282.

Fire Door Safety Week was launched in 2013 and this year runs from 23 to 27 September.
