To help celebrate Black History Month, we were delighted to welcome over 300 local residents to the Old Laundry community centre to celebrate the launch of Thriving Stockwell’s book ‘Thrive for Life’.
The book is a community-crafted health and wellbeing book, created with the East African and Middle Eastern community.
The book launch was a community-led event, and included a free community fun day. Celebrating diversity, culture and wellbeing within the local community, the day was filled with exciting activities and healthy food cooked by local residents. The food was inspired by the book and based on traditional African recipes.
Activities included:
- Morley College Adult Learning delivered arts and craft activities and hand massage
- Root 'n' Branch delivered a badge making workshop and provided cost of living advice
- LEAP (Lambeth Early Years Partnership) held storytelling and ‘rhyming for little ones’ activities
- Stockwell Wellbeing Partnership, represented by Dr Vikesh Sharma, Erica Figueiredo (The Grantham Practice) and Brixton Pavilion Pharmacy, caried out health checks and provided vaccination advice.
Marta Sordyl, Stockwell Partnership said:
“The Thriving Stockwell programme aims to improve health and wellbeing in the neighbourhood through raising awareness of, and better connecting, services and people. It was wonderful to see so many local residents, of all ages, at the event. Thank you Hyde - we couldn’t have done it without your support.”
Rima Rauf-Choudhury, designer of the Thrive for Life book said:
''We’ve been met with an overwhelming response to the book. It speaks volumes about the positive impact the event has had in the community.”
Everybody attending the event received a free copy of the book.
Feedback on the book was really positive:
“It’s colourful, everything shows you how to have a happier life. It appeals to everybody.”
“It gives helpful lifestyle changes and includes useful recipes.”
“It will benefit so many people in having a better and healthier life.”
