Major works to renovate and improve The Old Laundry community centre in Stockwell have started. The works follow consultation with local community groups including the charity Young People Matter, which uses the centre as a base, and include asbestos removal as well as other improvements. The works started on Monday 6 June.
The first stage of the work, the removal of asbestos from the basement of the building, is due to take eight weeks. Further improvement works will take place after that, taking a total of sixteen weeks, after which the new, improved community space will reopen for the groups to use again.
The works will create a fresh, brighter community space that’s safe and fit for purpose. In addition, other improvement works have also started in Stockwell, including:
- Improved lighting in Stockwell Gardens West, improving the environment around the Green and under-croft
- Pavement upgrades and replacements around Huxley House, Thring House and Morant House
- Improvement to balconies ensuring they meet current safety regulations.
We've found temporary accommodation for all the community groups that use The Old Laundry, while the community centre is out of action. Part of the ground floor at nearby Cassell House will be used by the Young People Matter charity and community meetings such as coffee mornings will also be held there. Other events, such as the bingo club, will be temporarily relocated to the Stockwell Centre.
