Creating great places for people to thrive

Our Community and Place Standard sets out how we’ll design new homes and places.

“We’re committed to keep building genuinely affordable homes in thriving neighbourhoods, as we know this has a profound impact on the wellbeing and life chances of our customers, as well as society and the economy as a whole,” said Andy Hulme, Hyde Group Chief Executive Officer.

“Our Community and Place Standard sets out our key requirements for all our developments, ensuring we build high quality, safe and sustainable homes that are affordable to live in – and to look after – in neighbourhoods that make the most of green spaces and are enjoyable places to live.

“But it’s not just about designing and building homes. The standard also considers customer wellbeing and long term operational and environmental aspects of homes and communities. There’ll be a plan for every scheme, to help ensure we engage with communities and local stakeholders throughout the development period and build positive relationships with the people living there.”

The standard was developed with customers and colleagues to understand priorities for homes and neighbourhoods. We’ll use it on all our new schemes, regardless of size and location.

There’s a design guide and a tool to assess schemes from the initial site appraisal, through design and construction, to after people have moved in.

Hulme said: “Our social purpose is to build homes that customers are proud to live in, that offer year-round comfort and low living costs. And we want those homes to be part of vibrant, green and inclusive neighbourhoods that help support climate resilience and healthy, active lifestyles.

“Our Community and Place Standard will enable us to meet these aims. We need to be working in partnership with funders, local authorities and construction partners to build more homes, so we’ll share this standard widely, to ensure we’re clearly articulating our vision and expectations for all the homes we build, own and manage.”
