Stay safe during hot weather

Many of us look forward to hot weather, but when it's too hot for too long, there are health risks. Make sure the hot weather doesn't harm you or anyone you know.

The best way to enjoy the sun safely and protect your skin from sunburn is to stay hydrated and use a combination of shade, clothing and sunscreen.

How to keep cool and comfortable

  • Avoid the heat - stay out of the sun and don’t go out between 1pm and 3pm, as that is usually the hottest part of the day
  • Shut windows and pull down the shades during the day - open the windows for ventilation when it's cooler
  • Have cool baths or showers 
  • Drink cold drinks regularly - water and diluted fruit juice.  Avoid excess alcohol, caffeine or sugary drinks
  • Listen to alerts - on the radio, TV or social media about keeping cool
  • Plan ahead - make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications you need
  • Dress appropriately - wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat and sunglasses if you go outdoors
  • Check up - on friends, family and neighbours who may be vulnerable.

Help avoid fires

  • Don't barbecue on balconies or on grass
  • Don't leave broken bottles or glass on grass as it can start fires
  • Dispose of cigarettes safely
