HYPE at Hyde as young people spend the day with us

Posted on 13 July 2018

We hosted a group of 25 young residents at our first HYPE (Hyde Young People’s Experience) event. They joined our staff to spend the day finding out how our organisation operates, learning more about the world of work and developing a greater understanding of career pathways.

The young people, aged 15-27, live in our homes in Brent, Lambeth and Southwark and were invited along with their youth leaders from Big Kid, Jason Roberts Foundation, Hornstars, Active Communities Network and the HAYN Careers Academy.

HYPE is a new youth-focused initiative that builds on our successful Takeover Challenge events from the previous two years. The day was shaped with and for young people and focused on sharing the knowledge, skills and expertise held across the business to create an interactive learning experience.

Successful Places Manager Sarah Willis explained: “Our ambition for 2018 is to get 50 young residents into employment and training. Through creating a mutual learning experience we can really open up wider opportunities for young people and inspire our staff to take on mentoring and volunteering roles.”

After kicking off with icebreakers and staff recounting stories of their career journeys, participants went to skills development sessions that focused on interview and presentation tips and techniques, CV development and advice on personal branding and being ‘employer aware’ in relation to use of social media.

The feedback was very positive: “It was good to speak to so many young members of staff who have started their careers at Hyde as apprentices. It makes me feel that I have opportunities I hadn’t thought about before,” said one of the young people.

Group Chief Executive, Elaine Bailey, is enthusiastic about working with young residents and said: “We want to create an inspirational work place experience and I am proud of the work we do with partner organisations to get young people into employment or training. The first HYPE event was great. We had more young people in the office than ever before and their presence created a real buzz throughout the day.”

All of the young participants were invited to apply for opportunities with Hyde and its contractors. They will receive follow-up support to enable them to pursue the next steps in their career journey. In addition Hyde’s Successful Places team plans to identify new opportunities to support HYPE participants, along with other young residents, into employment and training in the coming months.

The event was sponsored by Just Ask and more than 48 of our staff gave their time and expertise to encourage and support the young people, making the event a great success.
