A warm and safe home for Christmas

Posted on 20 December 2024

Thanks to Hyde, Peter has a new and secure home for Christmas.

Milton Keynes Local Authority contacted us as they wanted support finding suitable accommodation for 57-year-old Peter, who is vulnerable and was living in a tent. Luckily, we had availability at one of our sheltered schemes, Simon De Senlis Court, in Northampton.

Hyde Lettings Adviser, Marie, tells us more and explains how Peter is in a new home for Christmas.

“I contacted Peter and during the initial application interview he explained that he’d been living in a tent since November 2023. He was living in a tent as he’d left his temporary accommodation as it was in a bad condition. The landlord wouldn’t communicate or try and resolve the issues. After a while, things just got too much and Peter left his home and ended up living in a tent.

He said that he was more than willing to relocate from Milton Keynes to Northampton. After assessing affordability and whether the property at Simon De Senlis was suitable for his needs, we made it a priority for Peter to view the flat.

Myself, along with a Hyde Lettings Officer and the Scheme Manager, showed Peter the flat and facilities available within the scheme. After seeing the flat he accepted immediately. So, his application interview was completed on 9 December and he was handed the keys to his new home on 10 December.

We began the tenancy induction and during this time, Peter told us a little about his experiences whilst living in his tent. He explained he was unable to sleep well because of the lack of security. He constantly feared being robbed or attacked during the night. The lack of sleep had negative impacts on his health.

Peter said it was very difficult not having amenities at hand and having to go out in the rain and cold to wash or use a toilet. He found it particularly difficult not having facilities or privacy if he didn’t feel well. The land around his tent was clay and the water didn’t drain away. He said that everything was so muddy and a lot of the time he was unable to keep clean.

I called Peter to see how he was getting on after he’d received his keys, and to let him know I’d arranged for white goods to be delivered to him through our Helping Hand Fund. He said he’s settling in well and has immediate plans to decorate and make his new flat a home. I’m so happy Peter now has a secure and warm home for Christmas.”

Peter loves his new home at Simon De Senlis. He said: “It’s just what I’ve been looking for. I wanted to find somewhere peaceful to get on with my life. Finding such a peaceful home is a breath of fresh air.”
