Volunteers from Hyde’s Property Services team, contractor Axis Europe, paint supplier AkzoNobel and the Kennington Park Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association redecorated Kennington Park Community Centre during a ‘painting day’ on 6 October.
The 21-strong team painted walls and skirting boards in the centre’s entrance hall, the main hall and a meeting room. Timber elements of the building’s façade, and wooden planters in the courtyard, were also treated and painted.
“The day came about after Marilyn Evers from the Kennington Park Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (KPETRA) had asked me if I could help find a painting contractor,” explained Hyde Contract Manager Darren French.
“KPETRA recently took over joint running of the community centre with Hyde and wanted to freshen it up. We had been looking to set up a community initiative and this seemed like a perfect project for the Hyde DIY SOS Team.”
Paint and materials were donated by AkzoNobel, who, along with Hyde’s London painting contractor Axis Europe, donated labour for the day. “Axis staff also repaired and prepped everything beforehand,” Darren added.
The day started with a ‘painting masterclass’ from Axis, to teach the less-experienced team members how to paint properly. “We also made sure they worked with someone with more experience; so as well as being able to put something back into the community, they also learnt a new skill,” Darren said.
Kennington Park Community Centre is next door to Oval Cricket Ground, offering a range of social, cultural, economic and educational activities to local people. As well as the main hall, there are two small meeting rooms, a kitchen and outdoor space.
