Ceremony marks start of Harrow Square work

Posted on 26 April 2017

A groundbreaking ceremony has taken place to mark the beginning of above-ground works at Harrow Square, an exciting new landmark for Harrow, bringing 318 homes to the borough. Local councillors met with representatives from Barratt London and Hyde Group, co-developers of the project, located on College Road, to commemorate a significant milestone in the development’s construction.

Four Harrow councillors were in attendance, including Leader of the Council Councillor Sachin Shah, and councillors Keith Ferry, Sue Anderson and Ghazanfar Ali.

Councillor Sachin Shah gave a speech to mark the occasion, which was followed by photographs and closing comments.

Cllr Sachin Shah, Leader of Harrow Council, said: “The housing crisis is the single biggest barrier to prosperity, growth and fairness facing Londoners today. That is why I am pleased that the ambitious Harrow Square project will deliver 318 much needed houses. I am also delighted to hear that 20% of the staff and operatives currently employed on site are local residents.

“We must make sure than everyone in Harrow gets a benefit of the regeneration. As part of this development, there will be a new library and separate library pavilion facilities for our residents to enjoy. The public space will include a climbing wall and artwork generated from one of the colleges in the borough. We’re building a better Harrow, and there are lots of exciting plans in place to make Harrow a great place to live and work.”

Ed McCoy from Barratt London said: “It was a privilege to commemorate this key stage in the development of Harrow Square with Harrow’s local councillors and The Hyde Group. Their attendance is demonstrative of both the importance of the project to the local community and the councillors’ commitment to their constituents.

“Harrow Square is going to be a fantastic development, providing homes, a new central space and a public library, which will improve the face of Harrow for future generations.”

Elaine Bailey, Hyde Group CEO said: “The Hyde Group is very pleased to be working with Barratt and London Borough of Harrow to deliver well designed homes for people with a range of incomes, together with community facilities a library and public square to help with the transformation of Harrow Town Centre. The Hyde Group will continue to work in partnership with Barratt and others to help tackle the housing crisis in London and the South East"

The Harrow Square development is part of the £1.75bn Heart of Harrow Opportunity area investment programme. It is a landmark scheme of 318 apartments in four blocks of varying heights from six to twenty storeys.

With a new 1,450 sq m library at its centre and prime retail space, Harrow Square will not only provide much needed new homes, but will also be a focal point for the rejuvenated town centre – creating a new destination in the heart of Harrow. Upon completion the development will front the existing high street, College Road, which is home to a number of chain and independent retailers.
