Partnering with Chichester College to deliver local apprenticeships

Posted on 17 March 2016

As part of National Apprenticeship Week (14-18 March), Chichester College staff have been venturing off campus and into work spaces around Sussex to discover more about apprenticeships. Donna Carr, sales manager for the college has been shadowing two maintenance apprentices – Harry Boarer and Matthew Barnes - who are employed by Hyde Property Services.

These are among the first apprentices to be studying on this course, which is in its first year and has been created specifically for Hyde by Chichester College.

Matthew said: “I’m currently on an apprenticeship with Hyde for multi-trade building maintenance. It’s something I’m enjoying and I’m learning a lot from it.

“At the moment I am learning basic plumbing and I’m looking forward to learning more about carpentry and decorating as my apprenticeship develops.”

Donna followed Matthew and Harry over the course of a day as they refitted a kitchen at a property in Hove – from gutting the old kitchen to installing new units and piping, as well as plastering, tiling and decorating the room.

She said: “I found the day to be very eye-opening to see students being able to get hands-on experience in a real working environment.

“Part of my role as sales manager at the college involves working closely with employers to match apprentices and apprenticeships, so it was fascinating to see first-hand what they do.

“We’ve worked closely with Hyde to design a bespoke apprenticeship programme which meets the needs of their business – and it’s been so successful that they have even enrolled existing staff members onto the apprenticeship programme to help them develop a more rounded set of skills.

“That’s one of the benefits of apprenticeships – they can be tailored to ensure that the needs of both the apprentice and the employer are being met.”
