Hyde's social purpose

Why Hyde began in 1967

Hyde was established in 1967 by a group of professional businessmen who wanted to provide great quality homes for those left behind by the market. We are, and always have been, a social business. Our founders combined this strong social purpose with the entrepreneurial drive and professional skills to make it a reality. As we look ahead, we still have that blend at our core. It’s this that ensures our great intentions are matched by equally great actions, and lead to the greatest possible social impact.

Hear our inspirational founders Michael Hollingsworth, John Childs and Ted Watts talk about how we began 50 years ago in our short video.

The first 50 years

You can visit our history of Hyde to find out more about our first 50 years; also take a look at the images from our selfie challenge, which we ran as part of our 50th birthday celebrations in 2017, to symbolise how important it is to have a front door of your own to call home.

A great home for everyone

We know that Hyde cannot solve the housing crisis on its own. The shortage of affordable homes in London and the South East of England is a huge and longstanding problem, which will only be solved if we all play our part and all work together. That includes government, developers, landlords, charities and residents themselves.

Find out more about what we are doing to give people who are left behind by the housing market a roof over their head in our strategic plan.
