Social value partnership gets resident into work

Posted on 10 February 2020

Employment Advisor, Shaun O’Regan, is part of Hyde’s Love London Working (LLW) team. Alongside 13 other housing associations in London, the LLW team works to help unemployed people over the age of 16 into work. The team supports residents with job applications, CV writing and interview practice.

Shaun has been working with community gardening group Bankside Open Spaces Trust in Borough since 2016. Bankside Open Spaces Trust offers an innovative training and work experience scheme called Future Gardeners. The course teaches participants the core skills to gain entry level jobs in the horticulture industry without having any previous experience or specialist education.

Louisa Mansfield, Project Manager at Future Gardeners said, “Over 70% of our students finish the course and then find employment and this is due to the help and mentoring that Shaun provides.”

Evelina Sredovska, Project Team Manager, Love London Working added, “Shaun is dedicated to offering students support throughout their job seeking journey. He regularly checks in with how they are getting on and is always available to assist with CV writing and interview techniques.”

Shaun collaborated with Chichi Onyenemelu, Hyde Foundation’s Social Value Advisor, to involve Hyde contractor Groundscapes in speaking to participants about the horticulture sector and career opportunities. After listening to one of these talks, Future Gardeners participant Tony Sheehan successfully applied for a team leader role and is now employed by Groundscapes.

Tony said about the support Shaun provided, “Shaun provided me with really useful tips about looking for horticultural jobs, and more importantly, how to apply in a successful way. His constant support and enthusiasm gave me the confidence to believe that I could apply and get a job in an industry I hadn’t worked in before. As a result, I am now a team leader with Groundscapes.”
