A group of older Hyde Southbank residents was recently (14 December 2011) treated to a ‘comedy workshop’ followed by a fantastic three course traditional Christmas lunch at the Kennington Park Community Centre in Lambeth.
Chinedum Ukachuku, Hyde’s Regeneration Co-ordinator, said: “Silver Comedy, which led the workshop, was able to build a good rapport with the residents very quickly and everyone felt included and participated.”
Silver Comedy is a specialist training company that seeks to enrich the lives of older people by actively engaging them in group comedy workshops and performances. The comedy sessions seek to increase their self esteem and well being and counteract loneliness while using comedy to enhance their mental agility and nurture new skills.
"The highlight of the session was when people joined in the improvised comedy drama as it unfolded. They not only decided what happened next, they also played various roles in the drama alongside the comedians.
"Anyone was able to participate as much or as little as they wanted. No one was obliged to do anything at all, but we found out that almost everyone wanted to play an active role in the comedy games and improvised comedy drama without feeling under any pressure to join in,” explained George Baddeley of Silver Comedy.
There were lots of smiles and laughter all afternoon. “I thought it was very enjoyable due the fact that everyone participated and everyone was enjoying what was going on,” said resident, Rani Biring.
