Hyde celebrates resident’s civic award with high tea

Residents and staff of Hyde, and members of her family, gathered recently (18 April 2012) to pay tribute to community stalwart, Anne Gray, and enjoy a high tea at the Hyde Northside offices on Roman Way in Islington.
Anne’s sterling work in the community over many years was recognised this month with an Islington Mayor's Civic Award presented by the Mayor of Islington at the Islington Town Hall.
Nazir Hafezjee, Hyde Northside’s Service Director, who hosted the event said: “The award is well deserved: Anne is a truly remarkable lady who has worked tirelessly for more than 16 years to help create a better environment for her neighbours and to help the disadvantaged.”
The 67-year old great-grandmother from The Grove Estate said: “I was most surprised to get the Award and honestly didn't think what I do would ever be recognised, as I enjoy doing it. And it was fantastic when Hyde held the party for me - I felt very overwhelmed and humbled by all the lovely comments; it made my family feel really proud.”
Anne was instrumental in the negotiations between the The Hyde Group and the residents of the Grove Estate. ‘It’s been a very long journey, from being on the Steering Group to elect Hyde to manage our estate for a period of five years, and then wanting to remain with Hyde after that. I approached Charlie [Adams, Hyde CEO at the time] about Hyde taking over, and now of course, we’re part of The Hyde Group.”
Since then she has worked on behalf of The Grove TRA, organising a host of well attended community events, and has been a member of the Hyde Northside Homes and Residence Assurance Committee since 2001.
When asked why it has been important for her to work so hard for her community, she said: “I find it very satisfying to be able to help people when things are not right. When I lost my eldest son my friends and neighbours were a great support to me and I feel this is one way I can pay them back.
“I would suggest to people to get out there - it's not all doom and gloom - and you meet some lovely people, including staff at Hyde, and we have a laugh along the way. I have learnt so much since I have been involved. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without the rest of the TRA; we have a great committee and work well as a team.”
With this award, Anne joins a group of Hyde Northside ‘superstars’. Other recipients of the Mayor’s Civic Award include Doris Hester, Angie Passingham, and Teresa Mcmeekin. In addition, Jean Willson was awarded an OBE and Caroline Benford has been shortlisted for TPAS Southern Region Tenant of the year.
